When I first started raising a pet, I was completely confused about pet insurance. I only knew that medical treatment and physical examinations were expensive, and that I had to do ultrasounds and X-rays every now and then.
Later, I did some serious research and summarized several popular pet insurance companies in North America, including prices, reimbursement ratios, whether medical expenses are included, etc.
🧾 Basic knowledge about pet insurance:
Basic insurance items:
The main coverage of most insurance policies is the “Accident & Illness” category, such as diagnostic examinations, medical treatment and medication, surgery and hospitalization.
Wellness Plan with additional payment:
For example, daily health care items such as teeth cleaning, vaccinations, deworming and physical examinations generally need to be purchased separately.
Will the visit fee be reimbursed?
Many people overlook this point ! Although serious illnesses are rare, visits to clinics for minor ailments and pains are incredibly expensive. A visit to a clinic can easily start at $100, and whether or not this is reimbursed can really impact your experience.
Annual cap?
It is recommended to choose unlimited! It is said that if you have a major surgery, the cost may be tens of thousands of dollars, and you may not be able to bear it even if you bite a coin.
No coverage for old illnesses?
Yes, pre-existing conditions are generally not covered. However, some companies have a clause that covers the condition “if it doesn’t recur within 18 months.” I’ll talk about that later!
My choice: I finally picked ManyPets
After comparing them horizontally and making a few tables, I finally chose ManyPets (not an advertisement, just sharing)
Here is my logic of elimination:
Healthy Paws does not cover visit fees, pass
The monthly fees of Petco, Spot, and Prudent Pet are too expensive and not cost-effective.
Nationwide’s reimbursement rate is low, and it feels easy to lose money
Wagmo & Figo have a cap of only 10,000/20,000 per year, not unlimited
PetsBest visit fee is only included in the more expensive premium plan. There are many negative reviews, so I am a little hesitant.
Lemonade vs ManyPets: Both offer a great experience, and both offer visit fees, but ManyPets is more generous:
Unlimited annual reimbursement
High Wellness Subsidy
Some pre-existing conditions can also be covered (provided there has been no recurrence in the last 18 months)
I haven’t actually used the reimbursement process yet, so I can’t make any “recommendations”. I’m just sharing my research process and thinking logic with everyone!
